Working on Cars in Kendall-Whittier

Kendall-Whittier sits east of Downtown around Whittier Square, at Lewis Avenue and Admiral Boulevard. The Square was Tulsa’s first suburban shopping center and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2012. The University of Tulsa sits within the neighbourhood, which shapes the work we get here.

Student cars are the difference. They tend to be older, they are often left standing for weeks over a break, and their owners are frequently a long way from whoever normally fixes their car. A vehicle left parked through a Tulsa summer break very often will not start on the owner’s return, because heat does the damage to a battery while it sits.

What We Get Called Out For

No-start calls dominate, particularly at the start of a semester and after long breaks. Most are batteries, and a good share of the rest are starters or charging faults on cars with plenty of years on them.

The other common one is a car that has been sitting: flat spots on tires, a handbrake that has stuck on, brakes that have surface rusted so the first few stops sound alarming. Some of that is normal after standing and some is not, and it is worth knowing which before spending money.

If Your Car Will Not Start Here

Note exactly what it does. Rapid clicking, one heavy clunk, cranking that will not fire, or nothing at all are four different faults, and telling us which means we arrive with the right part. Call 918-918-4749.

Kendall-Whittier Questions

My car sat all summer and will not start. What is it?
Most often the battery, because heat while standing is harder on one than driving is. We test the charging system too, since replacing a battery that was flattened by a fault just repeats the problem.

Can you come to student parking near the university?
Yes, as long as we can get to the vehicle and there is room to work beside it.

The brakes sound rough after the car stood for weeks. Is that serious?
Often it is surface rust on the rotors and it cleans off within a few stops. If the noise stays, or the car pulls, that is something else and worth looking at.
